On the canal, this section is called the Échelle de Pouillenay "Staircase of Pouillenay". Cruising upstream, this is the first of two "staircases"; there are 15 locks in quick succession before a second group of 13 locks in the Échelle de Marigny "Staircase de Marigny".

This is the closest canal stop for visiting the historical medieval town Semur-en-Auxois (11 kilometres).

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is also only 6 kilometres away.
